Unalienable Rights vs. Foundational Rights

When your child comes home from school do you ever ask these questions:

What is that book you are reading for class?

You got that book from the school library?

What questionnaire? You took some survey at school today?

Someone came and spoke about depression and suicide in your ELA class today?

What is that on your computer?

The school counselor selected you for a special group to meet weekly?

From all the concerning reading materials, to all the “inappropriate” surveys and presentations, to kids’ DATA being used to alert officials to potential harms, deficiencies, etc., it has become increasingly evident that parents are in the backseat when it comes to the authority over their child’s education.

What are parents to do?

Many parents have acknowledged their authority, opted their kids out of certain assignments, opted out of surveys, opted out of using school computers, opted out of any contact with counselors, social workers, etc., opted out of assessments, and more. ALL PARENTS HAVE THIS AUTHORITY, your child is YOUR CHILD, your responsibility.

However, we have been showered with attempts of GOVERNMENT bodies and boards to pass bills and enact policies about parent rights. This includes our Kansas legislators’ and other organizations’ championing of bills and pledges. While you, as parents, already hold these rights as unalienable rights granted to us by God, our Creator, in our Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That’s right our rights come from God, our Creator.

Our rights are unalienable.

The purpose of government is to protect and defend individual unalienable rights.

When government tries to define individual rights, it ends up limiting and regulating away our rights and they become “fundamental rights”. What the government gives it can absolutely revoke.

What does unalienable mean? What does fundamental mean?

Unalienable means inherent and natural; can’t be taken away. Fundamental means given to us by the government and what the government gives it can and does take away. Under which of these do you want YOUR rights to fall?

Do you want those in government to somehow purport to strengthen your already wholly existing and absolute rights? Or will you demand that government recognize that you already hold complete and superior rights over all aspects of your child, including his education. Parent rights are not given to us by the government, they are unalienable rights given to us by God.

Therefore, be wary of the many legislators and organizations championing bills and pledges about “parent rights”. Laws to “protect” parent rights often mean the government believes it can give or take those rights away. Words are important.

Understand your rights and freely exercise your unalienable rights in every regard to your child.
