Kansas Capitol to Classroom: A Battle Against Deceit and Darkness

Kansas Capitol to Classrooms: A Battle Against Deceit and Darkness

By: Charlotte O’Hara

On Friday, March 28th, I was in Topeka at the Capitol gathered with fellow Christians to pray with legislators. Little did we know we were to have a very close encounter with darkness. As we passed through the tunnels to the visitor center, we were caught in the aftermath of a Satanic group’s attempted Black Mass in the Rotunda. This group was there to desecrate the core beliefs of Christianity. Remember the mottos “One Nation Under God” and “In God We Trust”? Apparently, these ideals were not on the minds of those who entered the Capitol that day.

We stopped when we heard a disturbance—Satanists were entering the building. In that moment, we began praying the Hail Mary as the group rushed past us, rudely bumping into us. The chaos that followed on the first floor soon led to law enforcement escorting the group’s leader back through the tunnels.  As we left the building, the voices of the faithful were heard, where hundreds of Christians were singing praises to God and celebrating the victory over darkness that comes with Christ.

I continue to pray for those lost souls, but this experience is just a glimpse into the evil that is increasingly present in our society—especially within our educational system. What was once a place of learning has now devolved into a breeding ground for destructive ideologies that promote indoctrination over education.

Let’s break this down:

Point One: The University of Kansas (KU)
On March 11, 2025, KCTV5 reported that KU is pushing forward with an agenda funded by a $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation. This grant, received in late 2023, will fund initiatives to study ‘questions of trans life’ which include hosting LGBTQ events. These initiatives began in September 2024 led by KU’s DEI department which has been rebranded as the Office of Community Impact. This shift is an attempt to mask the true intent behind these programs which seek to promote a leftist political agenda rather than offering a true education to students.

Point Two: Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools(KCKPS)
The situation at KU is not an isolated case. The Lion reported that KCKPS staff and union leaders were caught in a Zoom meeting strategizing ways to secretly advance LGBTQ agendas in classrooms. The district’s DEI department (now rebranded as Organizational Development) is hiding its agenda under a new name to avoid public scrutiny. This was revealed in the leaked chat as KCKPS staff was discussing how to handle LGBTQ topics—such as preferred pronouns and students’ “coming out” experiences—without informing parents. The head of this department, Dr. Candise Salinas-Willich, being “transparent with the group” admitted the change of name was for political advantage.

Point Three: Gardner Edgerton School District

In another chilling turn of events, the Gardner Edgerton School District banned Carrie Schmidt from all school property after she posted a photo of an LGBTQ+ poster in a classroom. Her simple act of sharing this image on social media has led to her being banned from school properties. Allegedly the district has claimed that Schmidt’s actions caused the teacher distress. This raises a terrifying question: Is free speech now considered harassment if it causes someone distress? If so, where do we draw the line? Satanists can openly desecrate Christian beliefs in the Capitol, yet someone is banned for exposing a poster? It’s a deeply disturbing double standard.

Carrie Schmidt has filed a lawsuit against the district and an injunction has been placed on their ban. This case could set an important precedent for defending free speech in our schools.

A Call to Action
As I reflect on these events; I am left with one powerful message: Silence is complicity. Leaders in our faith communities—pastors, deacons, priests, bishops and archbishops—have a critical role to play. It is time to educate and mobilize your flocks. We are face to face with evil in our schools and our society. If we do not act, we will be complicit in allowing it to continue. Silence is the sin of Omission.

We cannot afford to sit idly by while our children are subjected to indoctrination in the name of education. Now is the time to speak out, to stand firm in our faith and to fight for the foundational values that have made OUR nation great.
