Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab Voter Rolls a Dirty Business

Kansas Voter Rolls – A Dirty Business

By: Charlotte O’Hara

My good friend Earl Glynn wrote an article on his WatchDog Lab blog on June 10, 2025 pertaining to the integrity of Kansas voter registration rolls. The entire article can be found at: https://watchdoglab.substack.com/p/voter-registration-records-say-oldest
“Voter registration records say oldest Kansas voter turns 971 this year!”

Earl has for years been doing stellar work on many issues including “dirty voter rolls” which has been an ongoing issue in Kansas, dating back at least 20 years. According to Earl’s article Wikipedia says the oldest human is 115. And Kansas has 23 counties with individuals on the voting rolls who range in age from 117 to 971 years old.

Earl poised the question that perhaps voters 105 and older should be scrutinized. His search found 308 individuals 105 or older. Of the 9 listed in Crawford County (other than the 971 year old), Earl, with a quick Google search, found 5 of the 9 were deceased. Also noted was that obituaries can now be used to remove a voter from the voter registration rolls.

Back to the Crawford County voter older than Methuselah. It appears the error happened when this individual re-registered in October of 2024, dropped their middle initial, which then created a duplicate registration (at the same address) with the birth year changed from 1954 to 1054.  Why did this county clerk allow the same person to register twice?

According to Earl’s research Kansas has had a history of duplicate registrations which at any given time range from 200-250 across the state. Why is this a problem? Well, ties do happen and margins of victory of 10 or less votes are not uncommon. It is imperative that every county clerk have the tools to make sure their voter rolls are up to date and voters aren’t allowed to register twice.

What is the Secretary of State doing about these ongoing errors?  According to Earl’s article, the Secretary of State’s office has hired a new person whose duties will include registration data issues. It’s nice that the Secretary State has finally decided to focus on this 20 plus year problem. Could it be because he is running for governor that he has finally decided to do his job as Secretary of State?

There are many voters in Kansas concerned about election integrity. Cleaning up our voter rolls will be one step in re-establishing confidence in our elections.

On a personal note: I am in Portugal on a pilgrimage, El Camino, with the School of Faith. I will be returning on June 27th and next week I will report on my experiences on our 117km (72.7 miles) walk from Tui, Portugal to Santiago, Spain. Yes, I trained with my trusty Austrian Shepherds, Bear and the puppy (10 months), Harvey. Bear has decided that he is done, so as of June 14th it appears the next two days will only be Harvey and me in training. Hopefully I made wise decisions on my footwear, blisters are the bane of pilgrimages.
