Well, we’re getting down to the final push for the August 4th Kansas Primary. What a journey this has been, 44,000 miles in the last 17 months!! My poor car, just had to replace wheel bearings in both front wheels. OUCH!! So, let’s look at the issues beginning with the most important, LIFE: From conception to natural death. As we all know Kansas has again become an abortion destination, the killing fields on the prairie. On my first day as governor, I will issue an Executive Order banning any tax dollars from going to Planned Parenthood. AND please vote YES for the direct election of our State Supreme Court Justices so that we can end the horror of abortion in Kansas. Property taxes: We must abolish property taxes. This will require the state to cut expenses as we go to a “use tax”. There will be specific exemptions in the required constitutional amendment so the legislature cannot make Swiss cheese out of this new tax policy. Any additional exemptions would require a constitutional amendment. Senator Michael Murphy’s SB 488 would be the blueprint, which I testified in favor of during the 2026 legislative session. STOP Corporate Welfare: We have tried this for 40 years and it doesn’t work. In 1986 we passed two Constitutional Amendments: Equalization and Reclassification and Economic Development which have brought us annual reappraisal and billionaire welfare through tax incentives. These two constitutional amendments have created a two-tier tax system, one for us regular folks and much reduced rates for those who receive tax incentives. Example: When I was a Johnson County Commissioner a property tax abatement of approximately 88% was given to Cnano, a Chinese Communist company in New Century AirCenter just outside Gardner. That’s correct, they are paying approximately 12% of their property tax bill!!! I was the only commissioner who voted NO. That was 3 years ago and the building is still VACANT. $1 billion for Panasonic, $6 billion (with interest) for Chiefs Star Bond Steal and now data centers are examples of tax incentives gone wild. I would demand immediate sunset of Star Bonds and a moratorium on data centers until legislation is passed to stop all incentives. No incentives, no data centers. If you don’t put feed in the trough, they won’t come. Education: Close the State Department of Education. This paper shuffling bureaucratic black hole costs $300 million annually. We must stop taking federal education funds, federalization of education has failed miserably and it is time to declare our independence!! In addition, we must push all curriculum decisions to the local level, make our schools authentic, unique and responsive to the local needs, making our small towns magnets for parents looking for dynamic and effective education choice for their children. Election Integrity: I will work to throw the crooked machines out, use only paper ballots and hand count. Election Day must be Election Day and only absentee ballots for our servicemen and women, public safety personal and those who are traveling on Election Day. Other cost savings will be accomplished by ordering day one an audit of Snap and Medicaid programs, scammers favorite targets. Next step would be to reduce bureaucratic bloat across all agencies and departments. A big lift which will not occur overnight, but we must begin. I was raised on a farm, I never look at the entire manure pile, I just start shoveling and then I’m amazed when I see the progress which has been made. God Bless, Charlotte O’Hara |
