Well, the 2025 Kansas Legislative session has begun!! Another year with a super Republican majority (veto proof). I wonder what they will do to us, I mean for us, this year?
I went out on the Tax Foundation website and found that Kansas is indeed the High TAX Point on the Prairie. There is a LOT of room for improvement available for our SUPER majority REPUBLICAN controlled legislature, if they choose to do the work.
Hang on, we’re going to dive into numbers, be courageous!!!!
According to the Tax Foundation, Kansas collects $5,945 in state and local tax collections per capita and has a 1.26% effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing value. Kansas’ tax system ranks 25th overall on the 2025 State Tax Competitiveness Index.
In comparison with our neighbor to the east, according to the Tax Foundation, Missouri collects $4,635 in state and local tax collections per capita and has an .82% effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing value. Missouri’s state tax system ranks 13th overall on the 2025 State Tax Competitiveness Index.
Using this data, Kansas property tax ratio to value is 53% higher than Missouri!!!! Perhaps that is why there are so many Johnson County tax refugees moving to Missouri including to the very upscale development of Loch Lloyd, a stone’s throw east of Johnson County in Cass County, MISSOURI!!
Add to the sad tale of high property taxes, overall Kansas state and local taxes are 28.2% higher than in Missouri $5,945 in Kansas, $4,635 in Missouri.
According to the report, debt per capita in Kansasis 17.3% higher than it is in Missouri- $9,435 compared to $8,042. Public pensions are funded in Kansas at 77%, in Missouri at 81%.
Hmmmmm, is it just me or does something seem to be out of kilter in Kansas? Or, could this simply be continuing a long Kansas tradition? Decades of Republican controlled legislatures have given Kansans the highest TAXES on the Prairie. How have our Republicans become so much like Democrats?? Because we have let them. |
